Summer is almost over, but there’s still time for one last backyard barbecue! Here are just a few tips for sending off the season in style.

1. Expand Your Menu Barbecue might be your main feature, but even the biggest carnivore will start wishing for coleslaw after awhile. Make sure that you have plenty of sides to go along with your meat. Think about things like salads, mac and cheese, baked beans and casserole dishes.

2. Offer Multiple Forms of Entertainment Don’t assume that everyone will be in the mood for badminton! Break out multiple kinds of outdoor games, especially if there will be kids running around. You’ll want to keep them entertained enough to stay out of the cook’s hair. Consider investing in jacks, horseshoes, baseball mitts and regulation cornhole boards.

3. Stay Cool Temperatures might be dropping, but it’s still pretty warm outside. Give your guests a shaded area where they can escape the worst of the heat, and make sure that you always have enough drinks to go around. You might also set up sprinklers and slip-and-slides for the little ones to enjoy.

4. Play Some Tunes Music can be a great icebreaker if you’re hosting a barbecue where people are meeting for the first time. You don’t have to blare it; just let it play through some wireless speakers as a kind of background noise. The ones who enjoy your playlist will pay attention to it, and the ones who don’t like it can easily ignore it.

5. Plan for Messes The more clean-up that you do in the moment, the less that you’ll have to worry about after everyone has gone home. Set up big trash cans so that people know where to put their garbage. If possible, offer a lot of finger foods that don’t require the excessive use of plates, forks and napkins. These are just a few tips for organizing a summer barbecue. Whether you’re taking over a public park or simply sharing a few drinks in your backyard, you’ll want to plan things carefully to throw a party that no one will forget!
